Social Listening vs Intent Data: Which One Finds Buyers?

They are sold as the same category and solve different problems. One tells you what people say about you, the other tells you who is shopping.

Social listening and intent data get sold into the same budget line and are frequently confused. They answer different questions, and buying the wrong one is an expensive way to learn that.

Social listening answers what people say

Classic social listening was built for brand and communications teams. It tracks mentions of your name, measures sentiment, and alerts you when something is going wrong. It is organised around your brand as the subject.

Intent data answers who is shopping

Intent data is organised around the buyer. It infers that an account is researching a category, usually from aggregated content consumption, and hands sales a list of companies to prioritise. It rarely tells you which person to contact or what to say.

Which one you need

If your problem is reputation, listening is the correct tool. If your problem is pipeline, you want something closer to intent, with one important addition: the underlying conversation. A company name with an intent score gives a sales rep nothing to open with. The original post does.

The useful middle ground is monitoring public conversation for commercial signals rather than brand mentions, which keeps the context that makes outreach land.
